Technology Law And The Protection Of Information

In a world that revolves around I.T, it stands to reason that technology and information are inextricably linked. Regarding Technology Law both business and private individuals should know what laws apply and how they use technology.

Technology laws impact both start-up and well-established businesses and Technology Law specialists like us help our clients navigate changes in these laws which can occur as fast as the changes taking place in technology itself.

Technology and Information

Typically, the Information Technology department of a large company would be responsible for managing, storing, processing, protecting, transmitting, and later retrieving information as it is deemed necessary.

The trouble is information is valuable and subsequently susceptible to theft. “How can I protect my intellectual property including patents, copyrights, and trademarks?’’ therefore, is a commonly asked question and has a simple answer. Engage with Technology Law experts like Glenn Rooseboom Inc. for solid advice and to establish exactly what rights you need to protect your works and data and what documentation is required to do so.

Another important question you may ask is ‘’Does my business plan protect others’ privacy?’’ A good answer to that would be in the form of another question ‘’Am I doing what I need to protect the privacy of my employee’s information?”

Protecting Your Customers’ Information – POPI

The steps you need to take to ensure the protection of your client’s information too is of the utmost importance. A few basic tips on this are…

  • Don’t reveal the personal details of clients to anyone;
  • Don’t reveal fellow staff members’ personal details to third parties;
  • Triple check before you upload or send documents to a client;
  • Use your work phone/laptop only for work and don’t take selfies in the office!
  • Ensure you have effective and up to date anti-virus protection;
  • Don’t leave customer documents lying around – store them somewhere safe!
  • Arrange to have regular POPI training sessions.

These are just examples of how important information is in business and why the PoPI act is now so much more stringently enforced.
