Glenn Rooseboom Inc. is a multi-faceted legal entity. Apart from being Attorneys, Notaries and Conveyancers (and experienced exponents of all these areas of law) our full gambit of services include, amongst other things, Technology law. This is probably one of the most crucial areas of legal practice in today’s world of rapidly advancing technology.
In the next 2 months, we will be focussing on Technology law, with the focus this month on what it is and what it encompasses. We live in a world of rapidly advancing technology and cyber-crime issues, but Technology law is much more than just that, and that’s why the question is often asked ‘’Is technology law just about cyber-crime?’’
Well, it certainly is not. Although cyber-crime, and the protection thereof, is probably the biggest issue facing many of our clients, Technology law encompasses much more. For the uninitiated, if I can try to explain it in simple terms, Technology law is creating the framework for the collection, storage, dissemination, and use of information in the digital space.
We should remember though that because technology is expanding at such a rapid pace, so too are the parameters of technology law! This produces some confusion amongst many people seeking help with regard to technological issues, so If you’re not sure what your specific legal issue falls under just talk to us. We are happy to explain it and we are always there for you.
Data and the dark web
One example that may help to illustrate the principle of what technology law does and stands for is this. Although it may be of great benefit to us to be able to do our banking sitting on a park bench or send selfies around the world to our friends and family, with so much information floating around in digital space we all open ourselves to become vulnerable to hackers, and those who operate on the dark web.
Data is a valuable commodity, particularly in the business arena where the theft of data can elicit cybercriminals to hold business owners to ransom (hence the term ransomware) – as is personal information which can give criminals access to information that can leave the individual vulnerable to theft and blackmail.
Consult the professionals
Predicting the future has always been difficult, but with constantly emerging technologies, it has now become practically impossible. Many of these technologies will change the world as we know it but it is important that they are still aligned with human rights. We at Glenn Rooseboom Inc. stand behind this and keep ourselves totally up to date with such technologies and the laws that govern them.
If you have been a victim of any IT foul play, contact us as soon as possible. We can help. This is the reason we practice technology law – to serve and protect our clients. Watch this space for our next article where talk more about human rights and unpack various forms of technology law. Until then stay safe – and legally protected!
